Apophenia: Typeoneerror

2003

Apophenia is defined as the "spontaneous perception of connections and meaning in unrelated phenomena." The term was coined by K. Conrad in 1958. TypeOneError: Apophenia originally began as a gathering place for shared information - information that is being shared, moved, stored. On the front end, the user sees a “design portal,” at the time (2001), a popular style of website. However, the data being shared between users was at a later date (namely, my thesis) used to create dynamic, “data inspired” drawings. TypeOneError featured a user system and was my first foray into linking massive amounts of content between Flash and MySQL. Users shared news, events, links and other such content. The site had monthly features, highlighting other artists and designers with online presences. The left side of the site was “dynamic.” Users could create windows and drop content sections on to them, in essence, creating their own layout. Users could save this layout along with customized background graphics as well as change the colors of the background and windows. Apophenia has a Flash 5 front-end with a PHP and MySQL database backend. The site is put together with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Photoshop was used in creating the initial design.
