Backstreet Boys

2007

The Backstreet Boys came to us with the idea for creating a “tour bus” themed website. After some brainstorming concepts and initial concepting, we flew down to Los Angeles where I was the creative director on a shoot for the website. The concept was for each “boy” to have his own personalized bus and the user would ride alone with them. So we shot scenes of each dude watching TV, making phone calls, etc.

After the shoot, I began design on the main part of the site. The concepts were based on the idea of a “floating” papervision interface, each section tied to an icon that represented its content. Once the first part of the site was designed, I moved on to designing a custom bus interior for each one of the boys. The concepts were based on a series of questions in a mock interview (items like colors, interests, etc.) - the end result being an ethereal looking bus interior based on each boy.

The rest of the development involved creating the interactivity in the buses and loading content from the content managment system. The site was primarily created in Actionscript 3.0 utilizing Papervision to create a moderate 3d UI. Cakephp was used to create a robust content management system and Limelight is employed to stream content to players and buses.
