Flick-A-Pop

Game Center Integration

Our old friends at FORM recently invited us to update and add Game Center functionality to their awesome Flick-A-Pop iOS game, created for a popular candy company in Ohio.

This being our first experience with the prominent game engine Cocos2d, we jumped in with excitement.

Using our experience with Apple's Game Center, we implemented and integrated leaderboards to display the top scores and added player achievements for high scores, total pops licked, and tasting all the flavors, among others. We also added achievement reporting using our open-source GKAchievementNotifier (available on github along with many other great branches).

Having been built for the early iOS (iPhone at the time) 1.x, the Cocos2d library was not playing nice with the new iOS 4.3. Tested on newer devices, the game was not working very well in its current state. In the end, we decided to grab the latest Cocos2d source and completely rebuild the Game, helping it run faster while adding the Game Center functionality and updating the graphics.

“I LOVE this game! It's so addicting and makes me hungry! It helps my finger excercise too!”
